Taking a motorhome on the ferry
A motorhome makes Corsica easy to explore, but the crossing needs more preparation than a standard car booking. Not every ferry listing carries vehicles, and the complete external dimensions decide whether the vehicle category and available deck space are correct.
Choose a sailing that carries vehicles
Conventional services by Corsica Ferries and Moby accept motorhomes on suitable sailings. Faster passenger craft can appear in route results without a vehicle deck. Never infer vehicle carriage from the route name alone: select “motorhome” or the appropriate vehicle category and make sure it remains available throughout the booking.
The main English route pages cover Genoa-Bastia, Savona-Bastia, Livorno-Bastia and Toulon-Ajaccio. Compare the road journey to the port as well as the sea crossing; an alternative port can be better even when its sailing is longer.
Measure the complete travelling configuration
Measure the vehicle as it will arrive at the port. Include the bicycle rack, rear storage box, towbar, roof box, satellite equipment and any trailer. Enter the full length and height requested in the booking form rather than relying only on the base model's registration data.
Incorrect measurements can place the booking in the wrong deck category and may lead to a price adjustment or refusal at check-in if the allocated space is unsuitable. If a dimension sits on a category boundary, use the operator's definition and ask before travel rather than rounding down.
Accommodation and the closed vehicle deck
Plan to leave the motorhome after parking. Vehicle decks are closed to passengers during the crossing, so there is no access to luggage, the fridge or a pet left behind. Corsica Ferries also states that camping on board and electrical hook-ups for motorhomes or caravans are not available.
For an overnight sailing, compare a reserved seat with a cabin and move everything needed for the night into a separate bag before embarkation. The accommodation included in a fare can vary, so check the final booking summary rather than assuming that a cabin comes with the vehicle.
Check-in and port access
Reporting times depend on the operator, port and sailing. Use the deadline on the ticket and confirmation as the authoritative instruction. For Corsica Ferries, current general guidance states one hour before departure with a vehicle; busy summer approaches and security controls justify additional time.
Follow the terminal address on the ticket. This matters particularly for Savona services, which leave from Vado Ligure rather than central Savona. Keep identity documents and the booking reference accessible before joining the vehicle lanes.
Gas, power and parking on board
Close the gas supply and follow the current operator conditions for cylinders and fuel. Do not plan to cook, run gas appliances or connect the motorhome to shore power during the crossing. Refrigeration and battery planning should account for the period in which the vehicle is parked and inaccessible.
Once directed into position, follow the crew's instructions for the handbrake, gear, alarm and mirrors. Take keys, medicines, documents, valuables, warm clothing and pet equipment with you before leaving the deck.
